What is making that noise?

When we went out to fitness today we could hear a very loud noise. We found out that we have cicada's living in our trees. We went back to the classroom and found out what they look like. We found out that they do not bite or sting so they are safe if we see them at school. It is also on Hine Taiao. Do you know anything about cicada's that you could share with us?

Handwriting star

Alizae was our handwriting star today because she worked smartly to be finished in time with great formations as well! Awesome learning Alizae!

Caterpillars

We are loving having swan plants in our room.  We are noticing when the caterpillars turn into j's and then split to make their chrysalis.  Miss Browne noticed some new j's had been formed just after the children left to go home for the weekend.
I wonder what they will look like when we all get back to school on Monday?

We also have some chrysalis hanging up in our room.
I wonder when they will be ready to open and we will see the butterflies?

Investigations

We have begun our Investigations learning this week with Room 3.  We are learning lots about sustainability this term so we can answer the question "How can we be sustainable in our school, our community and our homes?"  We have started our learning with watching the movie "The Lorax".  It has taught us that
* sustainability means caring and looking after our world.
* we have to respect the trees and look after them.
* we have to look after each other.
* we should not cut down trees because the animals have nowhere to go.
* seeds grow into plants, trees and flowers.
*seeds need water, sunlight, and fresh air to grow.
* having lots of plants makes us happy.  It makes it cool and a nice place to be.

Goodies

This week we have been reading a big book called "Meanies".  We didn't want to be meanies, so we changed the story to Goodies!  We worked with a partner to draw part of the story and we have made our very own big book.
It was great to see how the children could work together and produce fantastic pictures that went with the page they were given.  Miss Browne is very proud of the work the children achieved and how they showed another of our dispositions - collaborative!  Well done Room 2.

Lots of Learning!

We have been doing so much learning and it all came together today when we combined statistics, oral language, and statistics!
Today we followed instructions to make a piwakawaka with a folded tail.  We talked about house groups and what colour we are in.  When you are in a house colour you can get points for your house and then at assembly we find out which house colour has won for the week.  We have to show our values to earn points in our classroom.  We made the tails of our piwakawaka our house group colour.

Once all of these were made, we talked about our statistics learning this week.  We worked out that we could sort all the piwakawaka into the house groups and that would make them easier to be displayed.  We could work out how many children were in each group.

Yesterday we had watched 2 short movies about piwakawaka.  We used these to help us learn something more about them.  We then used our white thinking hats to think of a fact that we know about them now.  Miss Browne has published our writing and made them into clouds above our piwakawaka.
We are very proud of the display we have made in our classroom and how all our learning has helped us to make it. Please come in and have a look at it!

Congratulations!

We have two super shining stars in Room 2 this week.

Keeson received a certificate at assembly today for showing respect.  He puts lots of effort into his learning and this shows respect to himself.  He is also a super caring member of our class and we love having him in Room 2.

Shontai received a cool kid award in the playground this week.  She was lucky to have her name pulled out of the special sparkly bag.  This means that she has a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows with Mr Bateman this morning.  Yum!

Congratulations to Keeson and Shontai.  Room 2 are very proud of you!

How many letters are in your name?

Today we collected information about the number of letters in our names.  We then put each letter into its own box and lined them up to see which name had the most letters and which name had the least letters.  Here is a picture of our pictograph showing the display of our information.

Statistics - Finding Out

We are learning to collect, sort and display data. This means that we are sorting items into groups of things that have something similar about them and give that group a name. We sorted pictures of toys into lots of different groups. As long as we could give a reason why they belonged in that group, we could put our picture.

We coloured in our hands to show our favourite colours.  We had them all on the floor but then we grouped them together.  You can see our pictograph on the walls of our classroom.
I wonder what Room 2's most favourite colour is?  I wonder what Room 2's least favourite colour is?  The pictograph shows the answers to these questions easily!  Come and have a look!

Handwriting Star

Our Handwriting Star yesterday was Ziba! Congratulations Ziba on listening carefully and following the instructions to write the letter i beautifully! We love that you are so proud of your work too!

Audioboo

Today at reflection time, Miss Browne showed us how to use Audioboo.  We can record our voices.  Have a listen and see if you can work out the sentence starter we used today.

Monday Reflection Time

Today we talked about showing respect to others.  Miss Browne asked us to use a sentence starter at reflection time and it was "Today I helped a friend..."
We had 5 people in our class who were wonderful friends who showed respect to others today and could tell us about it.  Well done to Medhi, Shontai, Prapti, Tyler and Kaiden.

Today I helped a friend at lunchtime by getting help from a teacher.  Medhi

Today I helped a friend when someone got sore, I told a duty teacher.  Shontai

Today I helped a friend and I got a cool kids award.  Prapti

Today I helped a friend by giving them a high five.  Tyler

Today I helped a friend by telling a person to let go of my friend.  Kaiden

Aoraki Mount Cook is on Hine Taiao, our carving to show us that we need to show respect at all times.

Davy D's Dog

This week we read a big book called 'Davy D's Dog'.  It was a funny book.  There was a huge dog in the story that belonged to Davy D.  Davy D lived in a teeny tiny house and his dog was too big to live in it.  He kept on breaking things with his tail when he was happy.  Davy D couldn't keep him in his house so he built him a big, big kennel outside.

We made our own dogs and then tried to make a kennel for it using the Duplo blocks.  Cody even made one out of paper!  Some of us tried to take photographs of what we had created.  We decided that we need to make sure we have our name tag in our photo so we know who made the creation and that we need to move so what we are taking a picture of is in the middle of the screen.
